Flying by the Seat of My Pants

When I received the address of my Modify Tradition swap partner, Karrie at Freckled Whimsy, I was surprised to learn that she lived just 30 minutes from me. You may remember the sneak peak I posted with the Tufted Tweets fabric (yay Laurie Wisbrun!) – well, she left a nice comment on the Flickr photo so I felt a lot more confident in my choice. I started thinking how nice it would be to actually give her the quilt in person, but I also thought that might seem a little stalker-ish. I finished the quilt yesterday and figured, what the heck – I sent her an email and asked if she’d like to meet. She said yes!

Karrie and I (and her son) met at a Starbucks about halfway between our houses. She loved the quilt, and we ended up chatting about quilts and books and movies and quilts and swaps and quilting and cats and string games (remember when you were a kid?) for almost three hours. THREE hours! Best of all, she’s going to come to our quilting day this Saturday.

So – the quilt. Here’s the finished front:

And the finished back:

Notice the one seam flying geese – a traditional shape, made in a modern manner. Notice the Tufted Tweets fabric, with chairs and birds. Notice the name of the quilt: Flying by the Seat of My Pants. (I love naming quilts!)

Here are a few construction photos, with help from my cat, Buttercup. Lots and lots of “help.”

Here she’s standing on me with her front paws, as she prepares to…

…climb onto my shoulder. She loves to sit on my shoulders, grab my head between her paws, and rub her face on my hair. Then she stands and surveys her kingdom.

  1. Absolutely stone gorgeous. Very dynamic!

Buttercup is doing a great job with quality control, by the way.

  3. Very nice little quilt! Fun that you got meet the recipient and make a new friend. Your cat has an interesting coat with no stripes.

  4. How do I get someone to make a quilt like this for ME?!(Getting a great quilt from someone is my eternal goal!)
If someone gave me a quilt like this OF COURSE I would meet and talk with them for 3 hours! I would be picking their brain for ideas and inspiration…and then I may follow them home!
    Thanks for the pics!

  5. That’s the kind of help you don’t need! But they do need to feel like they’re being useful, don’t they?

Love the quilt! Love the kitty more!

  6. I see your cat is as helpful as mine. =^..^=
Looking forward to starting the skill series on Sew Mama, Sew so I can try a quilt like this.

  7. I love this Flying By the Seat of my Pants quilt! The pattern and the colors!!! Is there a pattern for this quilt or a tutorial? I’m still pretty new to quilting (although I have a UFO Grandmothers Flower Garden I pieced 23 years ago) I do not think I could just look at this and wing it, but i would love to make it.
